JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tuesday (24/08/2010), launched the number of Indonesian citizens who face the death penalty in Malaysia. According to Foreign Ministry data, the number of Indonesians who threatened the death penalty amounted to 177 persons.

Of that number, 142 people of whom 35 cases related to drugs and other people of non-drug cases. "Of the 142 people, 72 of whom are still in progress at the first level courts and no legal decisions. Eight people have been sentenced to death has been sentenced to prison," said Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa told reporters on Tuesday (24 / 8 / 2010) at the Presidential Office, Jakarta.

Meanwhile, 54 drug cases were sentenced to death in the courts of first and middle in the process of appeal in higher court (court of appeal). Five other cases were sentenced to death in the high court and the appeals process in federal court (federal courts).

"Then, three cases have been sentenced to death by federal courts and in the process of forgiveness plea for clemency to the state agency (state pardon board)," said Marty.

Meanwhile, for non-drug cases, 26 Indonesians threatened the death penalty. "Then, seven cases have been sentenced to death at various levels of courts. Two other cases have received waivers and exemptions," said Marty.

Marty said that this data still needs to be verified and matched with related ministries. He said that, from the citizen protection efforts by Foreign Ministry and representatives of Indonesia in Malaysia in 2007-2010, a total of 21 Indonesians have been freed from the threat of the death penalty. This figure consists of 15 drug cases and six non-drug cases.
